First established at Del Mar College in 1966, the annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show attracts works from some of the most creative contemporary American artists from across the United States. Each year, a guest juror of national stature judges the annual show with sculptor Carlton Bradford serving as the 2019 juror. Bradford has exhibited his work over his 40-year career in many solo and group exhibitions across the country. Out of the artworks submitted for 2019, Bradford will select the final pieces making up this year’s National Drawing and Small Show, which is hosted by the College’s Department of Art and Drama. For more than 50 years, purchase awards by the DMC Art Program and the William F. White, Jr. Library have built an impressive permanent collection at Del Mar College. The 2019 exhibit begins on Friday, Feb. 15, with a free opening reception—including hors d’ oeuvres, a cash bar and music. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. in the distinctive Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery. The national show closes May 3. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays. The exhibit is free. Opening Reception in the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery, Fine Arts Center, Del Mar College East Campus, Ayers Street, free.
